The Tourist Information Centre building in Tzaneen was guttered by a fire which started just after midnight this morning (Tuesday, 17 October).
Bulletin arrived on scene at 00:20, at the same time as the local fire department. The flames had already engulfed the main thatched roof building right opposite the Spur restaurant.
The owner of the Bead Shop stood on and watched in horror as her livelihood went up in flames.
Local security companies, Northern Security, Breedt Security and Letaba Alarms were on scene with members of the Tzaneen SAPS. Three Mopani District Fire Department vehicles surrounded the building.
By 01:00 the roof of the structure collapsed with a deafening crash. A few minutes later there was nothing left but a smouldering husk.
It is not sure what caused the fire, but witness say that when they arrived at the scene, a fire was burning next to the building.
An Ampath technician, returning home from shift, drove past the Tourist Information centre and noticed the flames. He alerted the fire brigade.
No injuries or fatalities were reported and investigations into the cause of the blaze continue.
